Most small business owners have no idea whether Google can actually find their website, which pages are showing up in search, or whether people are clicking through. Google Search Console answers all of that — for free — and takes about ten minutes to set up. If you have a website and you have not set this up yet, it is the single most useful thing you can do today.
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that shows you how your website performs in Google Search. It is separate from Google Analytics (which tracks visitor behaviour on your site) — Search Console specifically shows you what happens before someone arrives: what they searched for, which of your pages appeared, and whether they clicked.
It also tells you about technical problems — pages Google cannot access, mobile usability issues, and whether your Core Web Vitals (page speed scores) are passing or failing.
What it shows you
Search performance
This is the most useful report for most small businesses. It shows:
- Impressions — how many times your site appeared in search results
- Clicks — how many times people actually clicked through
- Click-through rate — the percentage of impressions that became clicks
- Average position — where your pages typically rank for a given search term
You can filter this by page, by search query, by date, or by country. It quickly tells you which pages are working, which are not, and what searches are bringing people to you.
Index coverage
This tells you which of your pages Google has actually indexed (added to its database) and which it has not — and why. Common reasons for pages not being indexed include technical errors, duplicate content, or pages accidentally marked as “do not index” in settings. Without Search Console, you would never know.
Core Web Vitals
Search Console shows your real-world page speed scores based on data from actual Chrome users visiting your site. If your pages are failing, it tells you which ones and roughly why — a useful starting point for investigating performance issues.
Mobile usability
Google predominantly uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. This report flags any pages that are not mobile-friendly — text too small to read, clickable elements too close together, content wider than the screen.
Google indexes the mobile version first
Since 2019, Google has used mobile-first indexing for all new sites. This means it crawls and indexes the mobile version of your site, not the desktop version. If your site looks fine on a laptop but is broken on a phone, Google sees the broken version.
How to set it up
Setting up Search Console takes about ten minutes:
- Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with a Google account.
- Click “Add property” and enter your website’s URL.
- Verify ownership — the easiest method is to connect via Google Analytics if you already have that set up, or to add an HTML tag to your site’s header. Most website platforms have a field for this in their settings.
- Submit your sitemap — this is a file (usually at yourdomain.co.uk/sitemap.xml) that lists all your pages. WordPress generates this automatically. Submitting it helps Google find your pages faster.
Data starts appearing within a few days. The performance report only shows data from after verification, so the sooner you set it up, the more history you accumulate.
What to actually do with it
Once data starts flowing in, check it once a month. Look for:
- Queries where your average position is 8–15 — these are pages close to page one where a small improvement to the content could make a real difference.
- Pages with lots of impressions but low click-through rate — your title or description in search results is probably not compelling enough.
- Any crawl errors or coverage issues — fix these promptly, especially for your most important pages.
- Any new mobile usability issues flagged after a site update.
